چکیده

The dissipation of mechanical energy in 250-nm-thick, MHz-range silicon resonators is found to be strongly dependent on the chemical nature of the surface. As a result, sub-monolayer changes in the termination of 250-nm-thick resonators lead to significant changes in quality (Q) factor. The chemical origins of this effect are under investigation. Strategies for the formation of arbitrarily functionalized, high-Q resonators have been demonstrated.

Ultra-Low Dissipation Superfluid Micromechanical Resonator

Micro and nanomechanical resonators with ultra-low dissipation have great potential as useful quantum resources. The superfluid micromechanical resonators presented here possess several advantageous characteristics: straightforward thermalization, dissipationless flow, and in situ tunability. We identify and quantitatively model the various dissipation mechanisms in two resonators, one fabricat...

Thermally Actuated Low Impedance MEMS Resonators for Mass Sensing Applications

This paper presents high-Q thermally actuated micromechanical resonators suitable for sensory applications under atmospheric pressure. Single crystal silicon resonators with resonance frequencies in the 250 KHz to 1.5MHz range were fabricated using a single-mask fabrication process on SOI substrates. The resonators were operated in a one-port configuration in their in-plane resonance mode with ...

Micro (and Nano-) Mechanical Signal Processors

With quality factors (Q) often-exceeding 10,000, vibrating micromechanical resonators have emerged as leading candidates for on-chip versions of high-Q resonators used in wireless communications systems. However, as in the case for transistors, extending the frequency of MEMS resonators generally entails scaling of resonator dimensions. Unfortunately, smaller size often coincides with lower-pow...

High-Order Medium Frequency Micromechanical Electronic Filters

Third-order, high-Q, micromechanical bandpass filters comprised of three ratioed folded-beam resonators coupled by flexural mode springs are demonstrated using an integrated circuit compatible, doped polycrystalline silicon surfacemicromachining technology. A complete design procedure for multiresonator micromechanical filters is presented and solidified via an example design. The use of quarte...

High quality factor silica microspheres functionalized with self-assembled nanomaterials.

With extremely low material absorption and exceptional surface smoothness, silica-based optical resonators can achieve extremely high cavity quality (Q) factors. However, the intrinsic material limitations of silica (e.g., lack of second order nonlinearity) may limit the potential applications of silica-based high Q resonators. Here we report some results in utilizing layer-by-layer self-assemb...
